"I would have walked to the clouds, if there had been a road".

This is an illustration to the second part of my novel. I was describing a moment, when, my character is lying wounded on the ground in the middle of the battle, too exhausted to keep on fighting. And at this very moment he sees northing but the clouds, so painfully beautiful and so far from him.
And I couldn't simply get rid of this image of the clouds passing before his eyes.
